A Modern Retrofit Solution

Rather than starting from scratch, we recommended a retrofit approach that would transform the existing conservatory while keeping the original base and brick dwarf walls. This approach saved time, reduced waste, and was more cost-effective than a complete rebuild.

The retrofit process involved carefully removing the old glazed roof and window frames while preserving the solid base structure. This meant less disruption to the garden and home, and allowed us to complete the transformation more quickly than a full new-build conservatory would have required.

By retaining the original footprint and base walls, we were able to focus our efforts on the elements that would make the biggest difference to both appearance and usability - the roof, windows, and finishing details.

Icotherm Roof System with Slate Tiles

The most significant change came from replacing the old glass roof with an Icotherm solid roof system. This timber-framed roof offers excellent thermal performance, with insulation levels that far exceed what any glass or polycarbonate roof can provide.

We used authentic-looking lightweight slate tiles for the outer finish, giving the appearance of a traditional tiled roof. These tiles are durable and weatherproof while maintaining a classic appearance that blends well with the main house.

To ensure the interior still received plenty of natural light, we incorporated fixed glass panels strategically within the roof structure. These panels allow sunlight to flood in from above, creating bright, welcoming spaces without the overheating issues of a fully glazed roof.

Heritage Flush Sash Windows and French Doors

We installed Residence Collection flush sash windows in a beautiful, modern Agate Grey finish. These windows are designed to replicate the appearance of traditional timber frames but with all the benefits of modern materials.

The flush design means the opening sashes sit flush with the frame, creating a sleek, streamlined look that's in keeping with the property's character. The colour provides a subtle, sophisticated finish that contrasts beautifully with the red brick base walls.

We fitted a matching flush door to ensure a consistent appearance throughout. The new windows and doors not only look fantastic but also offer significantly improved thermal performance and security compared to the original installations.

Cedar Wood Soffit Detail

To add a touch of natural warmth and character to the exterior, we installed an overhanging soffit finished with cedar wood. This design feature not only looks beautiful but also provides practical benefits by extending the roofline to offer additional weather protection.

This thoughtful detail helps tie the conservatory to the garden setting while adding a contemporary architectural element that sets this installation apart from standard conservatory designs.

A Complete Conservatory Transformation

Before our work, the Gosdens had a typical white uPVC conservatory with a fully glazed roof. While it provided extra space, it was uncomfortable for much of the year due to poor temperature control. The dated appearance also meant it didn't look like an integral part of their home.

Now, they have a beautiful, comfortable room that they can use all year round. The solid roof with strategic glazing panels provides the perfect balance of light and insulation and the contemporary colour scheme and premium materials have completely updated the appearance, creating a stylish extension.

What was once an underused space is now a favourite room in the house - warm in winter, cool in summer, and usable all year round.
