Green | A single storey extension in Allestree, Derby

The brief

The Greens wanted a single storey extension to open up their living space, giving them a larger kitchen and dining area for family life. They also saw it as a smart long-term investment to add value to their home.

This was a traditional extension rather than a separate conservatory or orangery, simply growing the footprint of the house. Thermal performance sat at the top of their wish list. They wanted the space to stay comfortable all year round, from a sticky August heatwave to a damp December evening. Bright, airy and easy to access from the garden were must-haves too.

Creating a new structural opening

To open up the kitchen and dining area, we needed to form a new structural opening so the family could fit an extra table inside. This is a delicate job that calls for careful planning.

Our team managed the brickwork with precision, kept everything structurally sound and tied the new tiled roof neatly into the existing house. The result is a sturdy space that feels like it was always there.

The products: Sliding patio doors

Sliding patio doors glide sideways along a track rather than swinging open, so they sit flat against the wall and never get in the way. We fitted a two-panel set here, which was perfect with the dining table positioned just behind them. There's no door swing to worry about and no wasted floor space.

They flood the room with natural light and make stepping out into the garden effortless. The slim frames and smooth running gear give a premium feel, while the multi-point locking keeps the family safe and secure.

The products: Composite front door

A composite doors is made from several materials layered together for strength. The Comp Door we fitted has a 48mm solid timber core wrapped in tough, impact-resistant CoolSkin laminate that resists warping, fading and bowing.

The dense timber core acts as a natural barrier against draughts, earning an A-rating for energy efficiency, while the multi-point locking gives real peace of mind.

Flush sash windows sit perfectly level within the frame when closed, mimicking the classic timber joinery of 19th-century homes without the upkeep.

We fitted the extension with Deceuninck PVCu flush sash windows,, which are virtually maintenance-free. No sanding, no painting, no fuss. They easily achieve a top-tier A+ energy rating, feature patented weather seals against wind and rain and look effortlessly smart from inside and out.

The results

The Green family now have the heart-of-the-home space they dreamed of. The kitchen and dining area feels open, bright and welcoming, with sunlight pouring through the patio doors and easy access to the garden on warm days. Blinds are included with both the doors and windows, so when the family do want a darker space, perhaps for watching a film, they can have one with ease.
